THE INTERVIEW

The Interview

I won’t lie, I don’t have as much of a personal connection to this film as the two prior, but it definitely slots itself snugly into the Dumberrated category. I also had to include a Seth Rogen / Evan Goldberg joint in my selection, to cover all the bases for ‘Movie-Making Teams That Heavily Influenced My Adolescent Thoughts’. It’s also probably their most overlooked movie, which was aided greatly by the good guys over at Democratic People's Republic of Korea. As you’ll probably remember, when The Interview was scheduled for release, North Korea hacked Sony Pictures, and then threatened to attack the New York premiere of the film along with any cinemas that put it on. There were high demands for bootlegs of the film in North Korea itself, and a South Korean human rights organization called Fighters for a Free North Korea even planned to drop copies of it over the country with balloons, but it was scrapped because North Korea said that would be a ‘declaration of war’! What!

Basically, I think all this buzz was a disservice to the film, because at the end of the day, it’s a dumb-ass comedy created by a team who love penis jokes and bongs in every scene. Not some groundbreaking, earth-shattering masterwork. Even those who were desperate for a good old fashioned shock-a-thon would have been disappointed, because it takes a lot less to offend Kim Jong Un than it does your average Western pubescent dumbo. Either way, I remember it being a lot funnier than I expected, and it couldn’t be more timely, so do not dismiss this silly action comedy that fully utilises James Franco’s ability to be thick as mince.
