Intro to Payment Requests
On August 3 we launched a new Mercury feature called Payment Requests. At its core the premise is simple: Payment Requests allows you to request money from any third party. A shareable link is generated and you can opt to send an email directly to the party you are requesting money from. The public URL exposes critical account details (account / routing numbers, etc.) to support payment via nearly any bank infrastructure while using secure auto-routing accounts under the hood. This maximizes ease of access but also ensure funds are routed and kept secure.
The guiding philosophy that drove the design and product direction was to start with the simple premise of facilitating a request for money. Research showed that customers were eager for things like full invoicing, credit card / ACH payment rails, and more but we also knew the feature needed to maintain an open-ended flexibility. By starting simple we have seen companies receive SAFEs from investors, invoice requests, and even companies requesting and sending money to themselves.
These unique uses are teaching us about what we need to build into future releases that will make requests more robust, more useful, and even more valuable for more of our customers using Mercury as their core banking partner.
