Z is for Zebra Cakes, next in the?90sNibbles?series! I won a school competition in elementary school, and the prize was a Zebra Cake for everyone in the class. I will never forget it; I loved those cakes so much! I would take a Zebra Cake party over a pizza party any day! Now, if only I could remember what the actual competition entailed. There was something about rolling a racquetball really far. I’m clearly very proud of my accomplishment.
Zebra cakes are the number ten bestseller of Little Debbie cakes, behind classics like Oatmeal Creme Pies, Swiss Cake Rolls, and Nutty Buddy Wafer Bars. The real Little Debbie is all grown up and is the Executive Vice-President of the company (McKee Foods). Debbie McKee-Fowler was four when her grandparents named the company after her. Her grandfather used a photo of her to create the image on the box. The only problem is, he didn’t tell her or her parents. Whoopsy! By the time they found out, the company was already up and running. Despite the rocky start, Little Debbie went on to be one of the most profitable brands. With a retail price of about half the cost of its competitors, Little Debbie owns approximately one-third of all snack cake sales.
Ok, 90s kids, it was fun, but we’re done, as my father would say. Letter Z is where I leave. Thanks so much for following along and supporting me during this fun and exhausting series! I’ll be bringing you more nostalgic fun in the future, though. Stay tuned! Now, time to get some sleep.
