Rhode Island License Plate Redesign
Rhode Island has been using the same license plate design since the late 90’s. A large, singular light blue wave centered behind dark blue numbers and lettering. It became a widely recognized symbol of the state, but was long overdue for a new look—primarily due to a legality that requires the state to redesign its plate every 10 years.
In late 2021, the Rhode Island DMV held a statewide competition to have their plate redesigned. I’m not a big fan of these types of competitions, but liked the idea of taking a stab at the redo. I couldn’t technically submit concepts (I’m no longer a resident) so it just became a fun side project.
Rhode Island is nicknamed the “Ocean State”, known for its beautiful seaside towns, numerous beaches, rich maritime history and more. I focused on nautical visual language to guide each layout—inspired by flags and patterns, to symbols and color. My hope was to convey that language through a modern aesthetic that felt recognizable, was simple, and not overly literal. Each concept has a dark and light version, which allowed me to explore lots of options.
I think some of the country’s most effective and memorable plate designs are the simplest—often incorporating a small detail here or there to make it uniquely theirs. I’d love to know what you all think. Do you have a favorite?
