Flourish - Tree Animation
AI is fun, but also pain, but also fun: how to make it work for you and not against you. Our Head of Design Maria Brilkova answers below.
There are numerous ways to integrate AI into design: generating ideas and requirements, conducting analysis, simulating user tests, and even image editing and generation—the possibilities are vast. Today, we'll dig into the latter.
At Unikorns, we've recently ventured into image generation, and here are the use cases that make the most sense to us:
Abstract backgrounds
Natural objects (trees, flowers, etc.)
Landscapes
Mockup base
People images
Playing with Midjourney is pure fun and exciting experience but results are somewhat unpredictable. So, is it suitable for real-world, client work? Absolutely. But there are a few caveats:
Be prepared to invest extra time in adjustments. Unexpected changes, like having six fingers, may occur and will demand your attention.
Be extremely watchful if you’re going to print the work, especially in large format
Be comfortable using good old Photoshop or a similar tool. Photoshop Generative Fill may let you down so be ready to become an old-school retoucher for a moment.
When using such tools, be transparent with your clients about your choices. It’s not necessary for placeholder images, but if you're being paid for a custom work and you want to use AI generation, informing your client about potential limitations will save you energy.
If you're wondering how such a liberating technology can be limiting, I have an answer. If your client (or you, or your Art Director) is dissatisfied with something about the result, you may find yourself in a situation where all your prompt adjustments and Photoshop tricks don't lead to significant changes. It’s just frustrating.
For example, altering the angle of an object while maintaining its look and details unchanged is tricky. Every adjustment with prompts introduces unforeseen changes, and you may not want that to happen. Therefore, it's beneficial to experiment with a client who is open to such creative exploration ;)
From our experience, AI generation shines best in any creative process—an experiment without strict requirements. In simple terms, it's a fantastic tool when you're going with the flow without specific expectations or you have the freedom to adjust the requirements to the result.
In the case of Flourish, we had a great time using AI. We generated the trees and all abstract backgrounds. But there's one more thing that's created with Midjourney. Can you spot it in our case study?
