I often mention that a good lettering vectorization starts with a good drawing, and especially a good inking. I always try to ink my drawings before I digitally process them. It's extra work, but it allows me to move on a lot easily afterwards. Plus, it's excellent practice to have a steadier hand and draw lines better.
