The biggest sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup, kicks off today with hosts Russia squaring off against Saudi Arabia. As recently as the 2014 World Cup, I was blissfully ignorant of the football world (or “soccer” for people who measure things by inches). But in 2015, my son fell in love with the sport and I quickly followed suit. Fast forward to today and I’m a diehard Borussia Dortmund supporter, a travel soccer coach, and a very weak pickup footballer.
The beautiful game inspires beautiful design and I’ve been enjoying some breathtaking shot series that football fans have shared ahead of the tournament.
Trey Ingram (from Jacksonville, Florida) and Christian Dunn (from Jacksonville, Alabama) began their series of shots back in February. Every week, they each shared an original take on the crest of the teams competing in the opening sixteen matches.
Here are some of our favorites from Trey (be sure to check out his Soccer Crests project for more)…
Christian’s series of crests are similarly stunning…
Studio–JQ (from Bath, UK) have also been producing a series of retro kit, poster, and cup designs for all World Cup participants. Here’s the complete set for Brazil and Spain…
Here are a few more of the kits from the project because… well, my goodness, look at them…
Dhruv Parnami (of Jaipur, India) created an avatar for each team captain—from the world famous to the lesser-known. Here is a sample…
Finally, bonus points have to go to Andrés Francken (from Toronto, Ontario). Not only did he produce a mini poster for each country—he also wrote an preview about each team at his Medium account (along with match predictions).
Here are some of Andrés’ posters…
I hope your favorite country has a successful tournament (especially if your favorite country is Poland or Germany!). ??
