What makes a successful Pitch?

When it comes to your creative business, long-term success is about building relationships with potential clients. Your Pitch is one of the first things clients will interact with when they land on your profile, which means it’s important to craft it with care.

Here are a few key things you can do to increase the chances of your Pitch being successful:

  • Keep it short and sweet
  • Speak directly to your target audience
  • Let your personality shine through

Keep these tips in mind as you follow the steps below for maximum results.

?? Step 1: Choose a format

Pitch is your chance to show clients the designer behind the work. Here are a few different formats you can choose from to achieve this:

  • Present yourself — Film a short introductory video sharing your work history, experience, education, and more.
  • Create a sizzle reel — Showcase your work through a video montage to highlight the depth and breadth of your skills.
  • Share your creative process — Talk future clients through how you approach the design process and what it looks like to work with you.

While these are the most obvious formats for your Pitch, we encourage you to get creative with it! Let your imagination run wild and tell your story, your way.

?? Step 2: Write your script

Now that you know the format of your Pitch, it’s time to write a compelling script to accompany it. What do you want to communicate to your audience? What do you want them to do after watching your Pitch?

If you’re creating a sizzle reel or montage of your process, this is a good time to think about what type of background music (if any) you’d like to include. Or, consider any text and/or subtitles you’d like to add to your video.

Pro Tip: Be sure to include a clear call-to-action at the end of your Pitch to encourage clients to contact you and continue the conversation.

??? Step 3: Find the right backdrop

If you plan on speaking directly to the camera, now’s the time to choose a good backdrop. Make sure the backdrop you choose is clean, organized, and has good lighting.

When it comes to lighting, avoid pointing your camera directly at the sun. Instead, keep your lighting source in front of you, not behind you.

?? Step 4: Film your Pitch

It’s finally time to film your Pitch! Have your script handy, set up your filming device, and get camera-ready. Here are a few filming tips to set you up for success:

  • Raise your camera to eye level.
  • Position yourself about an arm’s length away from the camera.
  • Be mindful of your audio (speak loudly and clearly).

Remember, when filming your Pitch, be confident, friendly, and approachable. As Chris Do famously said, “People hire who they know, who they like, and who they trust.”

?? Step 5: Edit, Edit, Edit

Now that you have your raw footage, it’s time to refine and edit your Pitch. Embrace your creativity by adding text, music, and splice in any other relevant footage as you see fit—whatever it takes to communicate your message, brand, and call-to-action.

Rest assured, you don’t need to be a video editing pro to create a high-quality Pitch. If you’re a Mac user, try editing with?iMovie. If you’re a Microsoft user, get started with?their Video Editor.
